Abstract

After a quarter of a century of reforms, China emerges today with renewed light and splendor as a result of its economic power, the prominence it acquired in the international system, its technological conquests and its influence in the construction of a new order in Asia. This paper analyzes the course of the reforms applied by the People's Republic of China since 1978 in their economic and political dimensions. It argues that for an adequate evaluation of its importance and systemic impacts, one must attend to relevant historical variables on which the answers to Chinese success reside, as well as questions about its future.
