Abstract

To answer the question regarding Germany’s interests in Latin America, this paper refers to negative -or security- interests, economic motivations, and shared values. With regard to the former, it is clear that Latin America has never been a direct or indirect threat to German security. On the economic side, the region constitutes a considerable market and this is why Germany should advocate against protectionism in developed countries. We argue that it is the positive factors based on common interests that allow a broad field of bilateral or multilateral cooperation between Germany and the Latin American countries. In this sense, some key issues are mentioned and it is stated that Germany should represent these interests within the European Community.
