Abstract

A unique vision at language is collected in Saint Augustine, seen from a pragmatic dimension that synthesizes the main contributions related to a sign efficacy. From an approach focused on responsibility and self-appropriation of action, the philosopher turns to the detection of volitional and cognitive mechanisms that intervene in the modes of use and verbal exchange. Among the most visible relationships and consequences of each specific speech act, it exposes how multiple variables with deep roots are combined in the enunciation, which are not only not disconnected from the dimension of ethos, but also contribute to its constitution and daily determination for a moral reflection. Therefore, the following ethical-discursive analysis of the philosopher's writings will combine these aspects and enable the appreciation of a first notion of verbal responsibility based on foundations of performative of language and meaning in transmission.
