Social Datafication and Artificial Intelligence: towards a new “scale leap”?

Abstract

Since the 1970s, there has been a process of strong penetration of digital technologies in all areas of social life. Currently, its process of massification and concretization allowed to glimpse a new phase of informationalism, closely linked to the development of 4.0 technologies, where the advance of social datafication is presented as fundamental. This article seeks to analyze the current developments of Artificial Intelligence within the logic of the social datafication process, understanding them as a key element both to enhance it, as well as opening the door to thinking about a new “scale leap” in current processes. of personalization and algorithmic modulation. To this end, a brief genealogy of the social datafication processes is displayed, linked to an analysis of the different phases of AI development so far to delve into the understanding, characteristics and sociotechnical effects.
